Hi all, I have been wanting a Yorkie for the past 5 years. I have done my research and settled on buying a Yorkie from Mistiblue Yorkies in New York. I had contacted other "breeders" and websites I found, but a lot of them appeared to be puppy mills online. Kim Balas took the time to answer all my questions (SHE interviewed ME), gave me references, who also interviewed me to make sure I would make a good home.
My friend and I are driving to get my Beanie (I named her that because she is like a little jelly bean) on November 19th. She will be 4 months old. O.K., I am really nervous about this, I never had kids and this is my first time with a dog (well, since I was 4 years old anyway). I am taking the whole week off from work to be with her and get her used to me. I live in an apartment on the third floor in a city near Boston. She is going to be an "indoor" dog mostly.
What I am worried about the most (unless I can convince my boss to let me take her to work) is leaving her home alone for 8 hours. I am going to set up a good sized exercise pen in my kitchen, with her pee pads, crate, (or should I just put a little bed in there and leave crate in my bedroom??) food water and toys. I will get up early and feed her and play with her and I can come home and check on her for lunch. Then I will feed her and play with her when I get home. I am so afraid she is going to bark all day.
I talked to Kim about this and she feels fine about selling me the dog after speaking with me and then speaking with the references and she knows my situation about working.
I am planning on having her sleep in the crate in my bedroom. Is this the best idea or should I leave her in the kitchen at night?? But I don't know if she will have to pee at night.
When she gets older and is beyond the chewing stages, I will gate her off in the kitchen and she can run around there freely.
I am really, really excited and I am willing to do what it takes to train her properly and make her and me happy, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed about having a little being in my house.
I would appreciate any ideas and any encouragement you all can give me, especially those of you who live alone and have to work and leave your doggie home.
