This is what I have heard as well, and are merely "cosmetic". Esp these days, very few complications arise from anesthesia, plus the cost of an actual dental from the vet is about the same price as the non-anesthetic kind. I've seen quotes of the non anesthetic dentals for $100-$175. The vet I took Smokey and Chloe to for their dentals only charged $150 for Chloe including bloodwork, and an additional $50 only for Smokey to do it while under for his neuter.
