The initial injury was occurred four years ago. The original ortho said that both the fibula and tibia "exploded". The emergency room ortho did immediate surgery cleaned up the fracture and put a titanium plate in. He released me less than three months later (without an exit xray) and told me there wasn't anything else he could do for me, that I would have pain and I would have to learn to live with it.
Fast forward to early June of this year when I found out that the break(s) never healed and the titanium plate broke. By the third week in June I had found an incredible ortho (one of only 15 in the US) who specializes in leg lenghtening and non union fractures. Dr. T performed surgery to clean the non unions, break the fibula and tibia, and install an external fixator with adjustors to facilitate rotating my ankle to straighten it and lengthing my leg by 1 1/2". I was encouraged to use the leg - the more I used it the quicker it would heal. Finally at the end of September I was able to walk unassisted. Unfortunately my ankle is swelling and becoming more painful since I started walking

. Hopefully it is just part of the healing process.
Dr. Terrell is a miracle worker. I honestly believe that God sent me to his practice. Here's a link to Dr. Terrell's website if you are interested
