I don't know what your set up is, but with Howie I just put one near the patio door and then gradually moved it outside the patio door. He'd then bark to go outside. This was on the advise of our vet and it worked great. He's now 8 months old and hasn't had an accident in the house in the last month & a half.
Which ever route you go, the main thing is you need patience !!!! and lots of praise.
