I once went to a groomer who thought that tipping was taking all of the hair off the ears. Took so long for me to get Pippi's hair right after that one. She is in a full coat and taking all of the hair off of her ears looked ridiculous.
Here is a picture of my Teddy with his ears tipped. I love the way my groomer tips ears....the hair is shaved only on the top third and nicely shaped down the ear. Note that all of the hair is not cut along the entire ear:
