Can you believe the nerve of some people??? If the roles were reversed and someone pointed out to me that my hands were (obviously) dirty, especially from gasoline (and touching money), I would COMPLETELY understand and say, "oh, you are right, sorry!"
I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I can totally understand you not wanting her to touch your dog...however to look at it from a different view...maybe you should have just told her you'd rather her not touch your dog because of the gas/chemicals on her hands. By telling her that her hands were dirty...even though it may be true...is kinda like you were looking down on her.

Think about her job and the type of work that she does and then to have someone come in, pay with a $100 bill with an expensive dog on their lap and then have this person tell them, "your hands are dirty"...I would have probably been upset and hurt just by that comment and reacted the same way...actually, I'd probably have been ugly about it.

I'm not taking sides at all...I just wanted you to see it from a different point of view.
