If she's more like a Chihuahua, your vet may be correct about the bathing, Chihuahua's have fur not hair and you could over dry the skin by bathing too much. I'm really sure it's the teeth. Loosing teeth and bloody gums make an earthy type of smell which could be pond like to some.
