I'm a transplant married to a Jersey Boy, and that is one of my favorite things about this state!!!
When MeganS and I were on out roadtrip to pick up Widget in PA, my gas was getting low, but had to wait until I got to Jersey to get gas!
LOL Poor Meggie was a nervous wreck!! (I didn't tell her that my car tells me how many miles I can go before I run out of gas!

The part of your story that is scary is how the woman didn't even think that her hands were dirty! A sneeze you can't see, but she HAD to see all the gas station dirt!!! Meanwhile, I'm so bad that I keep a container of anti-bacterial Handi Wipes in my cup holder between the seats!
