I don't think they are the same. The shape of the papaya's look different. The thai ones are pointy at the end. Anyway that's what MIL told me. First time I had green papaya salad, she asked me do I like papaya. I said no I hate it. She said Mexican papaya, I said yes, she said no this is not the same.
