Our Yorkies are on Trifexis Pink. This is an oral pill once a month that takes care of heartworm, fleas, and other worms (except I think tape worms which they don't get if they don't have fleas anyway). I live in Fl as you know so we have to do this year round. It may be the same in Calf.
For their beds I use the cedar chips. I made all their beds like a zippered pillow case. I mark the calender and change the chips every 6 months to keep them fresh. But I really don't think you have to do that. I put the used chips around my roses. Oh and I buy the chips at Wal-mart (hate wal-mart, but chips are 1/2 what they cost at Petsmart, Petco, or feed store).
