Originally from Oregon, I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years I sold my duplex after a bidding war and only being on the market for less than 4 hours (mls listing) bought the duplex for $160 sold it shy of $600 and today it would be close to $800 funny thing is, it's right in the city ( about 1/2 mile out of Beverly Hills) on a 3800 sq ft lot, location, location, location.

Moved back home to Portland, Oregon 2 1/2 years ago where the average home in a good area $250 and up, there are homes in $125+ in the least desirable areas.

I bought in "Reed College" area an old and very established neighborhood (about a 15 block radius) where homes range $350-$2million, was I amazed how things had changed. These are very old homes NOT one is new construction average year built 1920's, I have one of the cheapest houses in the area worth about $400
