Same question here. The pitt that attacked my pug had a loving home, grew up around children, has been around other dogs before, and even around my dog and family before. I had even let her in my house. Then out of no where she turned on my dog. There was no food or toys involved and the pitt wasn't even on her property. My pug is a very friendly dog and he got jumped by this animal. They have even attacked their own owners before. And I hear all the time, "It was such a nice dog, it had never been agressive before." Something just isn't right in their head and they seem to be set off by anything.
