The key is to keep up on it... do some light grooming once a week. If you let it go too long that is where you run into problems and it takes much longer to rid the tangles and matts from the under coat.
I too keep my baby girl (cotton coat) shaved on her top, neck, butt, tail and sides. I keep it that way do to the texture and the havock that I had to go thru in order to keep her groomed. It was hard on both of us.
And yes it is possible to grow out the sides. My Ruby;s sides are quit long.
