I would say exercise like crazy. LoL. Sometimes I'll take Jackson to the dog park around 6pm and stay for an hour and a half or so and if there were other dogs there to run around with him, he comes home zonked. Or a nice long evening walk.
Other than that, I would just say "lay down" and ignore him and make him go back to sleep (when I knew he was old enough to hold it of course). I can tell when he really has to go and when he's just getting up to... get up.
Now he sleeps until 11 with me if I want.
I udually let him out at midnight for the last time. He happily sleeps in pretty late if I want him to. I also have curtains in my room that block the sunlight and keep it really dark!
