Your dog may be experiencing car/motion sickness. Some dogs have a problem if they can’t see out the window, seeing out the window helps the brain compensate for the inner ear imbalance. Even if it started out this way, he could now be conditioned to see the car as a bad place, and anxiety may occur even without the motion sickness. There are car seats that allow a dog to see out the window, and don’t feed right before going in the car. For long trips, I would try a medicine for motion sickness; ask your vet the dosage. Some dogs experience a general anxiety toward the car because all their trips in it are to the vet, so taking your dog fun places in the car helps.
