I wouldn't worry about double the cost. I don't know about you, but we spend about $20 on food every 3 months. (Granted, it would be $20 every month and a half or so if we had two.) I know my mom spends maybe double that in a month with a lab and a beagle. There will be the vet costs, but if there aren't any emergencies or health-related problems, it's only an extra $100-$200 a year (depending on where you live) with shots, exams, and flea and heartworm medicine. You'll have to purchase a new collar and leash, food bowl, and maybe a new bed, but they'll share toys, so you won't have to go spend the initial chunk of change you spent when you were starting from scratch.
You'll just have to stay on top of the barking from the beginning so that no bad habits form. We use a can with change to curb Olivia's barking. She usually gets scared and runs to my lap when I shake it.
