Merle is actually the mottling spots you see in dogs like blue heelers. It's not an actual color per se, it's a gene. (and blue born dogs are more of a steely grey color?). It's the double Merle that causes problems, but merles can be dominant or recessive, so down the line can show up.
I may be wrong about the pups being blue born since I can't read whatever language the sites in, but I'm assuming that the pups are blue born.
