I know we have a lot of people who have little 3 1/2 or 4 pound Yorkies that are healthy ---but, unfortunately, this is often not the case. Even though many puppies survive without a mirad of health problems ---the odds are just not in their favor.
I am so afraid that we will never be able to stop this trend......

It is not a trend to want a Yorkie that is within the standard. They are supposed to be UNDER 7lbs. at adult weight. Your vet is totally misinformed if he thinks dogs that are close to 4lbs. maybe a little less is "criminal"
It is the size Yorkies were meant to be. Under 7lbs.
Having a 3-4 lb. dog is great for some people. And they are "within" the standard.
