I admit that I giggled at your story. Sounds like you needed each other. Brutus will turn out to be a good furbaby just because he is loved.
If his tummy is sensative and what he is throwing up in the middle of the night is yellow liquid,try to make sure that he gets a tiny snack before bedtime. I have one dog that has to be fed a little throughout the day and then a tiny bit at about 10pm just before bed.
