Welcome to YT. In the library section, there are some permanent threads great articles for the new puppy owner. Along with nails which need trimming regularly (probably at least monthly or more often), ears should be checked, and the anal glands. Your vet is a good source of advice, she can explain what a healthy ear looks and smells like, and how to tell if the anal glands need expressing.

Also prior to any surgery it is a great idea to get pre op blood work done.
