Since I have a Doggy Door, both mine go outside to potty. When I need to check to see if a female has started her period, I just get a paper towel, fold in into a 4x4 and blot it up against her back there.
If the discharge is very red, that starting, and when it looses it brightness or even has a yellow tint, thats farther into her period.
