The main thing to training them on pads is to keep a vigilant eye on them and when they look like they are ready to go potty, pick them up, run them over to where you have the pad and place them on it. Use some word association with the pad - we say "go potty on the paper" to Jack. And I would make him stay on the pad until he went potty. As soon as he would go on the paper, I would praise him like there was no tomorrow! Good luck!
