I re-read your post and I think I understand better. Keep the potty patch easily accessible. If you have a large home and give her complete freedom, she may not want to travel the distance to get to the patch. Start by giving her one room. Designate a place for the patch. Don't keep moving it to a new location. If she handle the first bit of freedom, enlarge her roaming room.
I don't think you need to do crate training. In fact, I think that would confuse matters.
