Tina,
When it comes to Yorkies, it's POT LUCK !
Their personalities vary as much as the people who seek them. I'm just not sure that when selecting a puppy, that you can tell anything about the way/how it will develop.
I firmly believe, that our Dogs do take on our traits. That's just the way they are naturally, a major part of their instinct to do what we want. And that being why, there is such a variance. I don't deny that there may/probably are, individual strengths and weaknesses in them, which cause a more or less propensity for a certain demeanor.
I have both male and female....
My Male Sneakers, is the older (3 yo now) and was a total puppy, until My Female Becca arrived. That TOTALLY changed him, to a quite stogy and proud Dog, who is very territorial and protective of us. He cuddles, but, it's when he wants it. Becca was 11 weeks old when she arrived, and I think that Sneakers thought that's the way puppies came to be, and that one was HIS !

Even now at Becca's age of 1 yo, he still yields a Bone or will break up a tough treat for her, and let her have a Toy if she wants it, and she usually does !
Becca, on the other hand, is the most outgoing Dog ever. She has not met a stranger yet, and her tail has been wagging since the moment she arrived. However, there is a similarity in them. Becca too is selective about cuddling, like Sneakers, she engages when she wants to. I'm not sure if that just happened, or, that she learned that from Sneakers ?
One thing I will point out is...
When it comes to qualifications for being the Alpha, don't think for a minute, that a Female can't handle that job !
As sweet and gregarious as Becca is, she has a dark side, which is just as possessive and territorial as any male I've seen. When she bolts out of the house, it's like she OWNS this place, and who/whatever is out there in the yard, had better leave NOW ! This goes for direct encounters as well, when that happens, she's shoulder to shoulder with Sneakers, and can be just as viscous in her display. Neither has ever bitten anyone, but, I make sure that there is always some "distance" and control over both, when we're out and about. I know this sounds contrary to her nature, but I believe and trust their senses, and don't scold them when they "alarm" and go into a protective mode. I just try to calm them down, and walk around the "situation".
So, we have the "Tmiids" and "Terrors"...
And a lot which is in between as well. I revert to my original statement on them fulfilling our needs, and assuming a posture which reflects our personalities.
The fact is, that I'm rather territorial, I don't like intrusions onto my property or space. I'm very protective of what's mine, material or living, and as you can see... so are my Dogs.
