Hi, I'm a runner too! I didn't start running until I was 45 and in the last few years I've done 2 full marathons, a 30k, a 25k, 11 half marathons, 2 13ks, 2 10ks, 1 8k and 20 5k races. I know what you mean about being the competitive sort... I'm addicted to racing!
Try
Running Mania - they're a super friendly group! I've been a member there since the onset of the forum and I can vouch for the fact that they'll be very welcoming and happy to answer your questions - plus there is very little drama there. Just like on YT, many lasting friendships have formed there too. It's a terrific place with lots of information!
As far as a great book, John Stanton's
Running Start to Finish is an excellent resource. It has a lot of valulable information for beginners and seasoned runners alike. Plus there are a bunch of different training programs in the book as well, depending on your running level. I'm also sure if you're a part of Running Mania and put out a call for a plan, you'll get a lot of feedback. People will likely PM you training plans!
If you're close to a
Running Room store, they have free group runs every Wed and Sat. It's a great way to get out, get your training run in and socialize at the same time. If you're interested, Running Room also offers clinics, which range from "learn to run" beginner classes to ones training for specific distances and/or races.
Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your running and happy trails!
