Optimizing Behavior In Puppies

I found an excellent article where 3 vets talk about optimizing learning in puppies. They tell about as their understanding of behavior expands, they'll be able to better prepare puppies for life with their human families.

They tell that behavior problems are one of the most common reasons pet owners relinquish their pets. It discusses some of the major behavior challenges faced by dog owners and veterinarians to learn why prevention is so important.

It talks about things you should train your dog to do and also about behavior problems, why the dog is doing this particular thing, and how to correct the problem.

They tell that puppies aren't usually trying to take over the world. Their behavior isn't about dominance; it's about discovering the boundaries and learning the rules in the environment in which they live. They're asking, "Can I do this?" The answer should be, "Why don't you do this instead?" Puppies learn rules when we're consistent about them.

A big question, of course, is what to do when a puppy displays a negative behavior. It talks about redirecting behavior. It gives advice to those who says the puppy is displaying destructive behavior, such as chewing on the furniture? They explain how to analyze the situation and how to correct the problem.

It tells about submissive urination, aggression, factors that influence training, and the role of nutrition.

The vet says the relationship between nutrition, behavior, and learning is just beginning.

One says “From a general practitioner's (Vet) standpoint, I think behavior is largely underserved both in veterinary schools and general practice. Nutrition is also often largely ignored. But both are a huge part, not only of development, but of the maintenance of life and health.”
