Use a pinch or so of corn starch, work it through the mat with your fingers first. The mat should separate somewhat, then pick away at the mat with one or two of the teeth on a comb, starting at the bottom of the mat. It will take time and patience but I think you can work them out and hopefully not have to cut them or lose too much coat.
