Glaucoma I am so sorry for what is happening to your baby, and how distressing to watch him bump into things etc and be so distressed.
He sure needs to see an eye vet asap as I didn't know that surgery was the first line of treatment for the disease? Has your vet suggested eye drops and oral meds?
My little boy Austin has just had cataract surgery at 2.5 yrs old and with it comes the risk of glaucoma. He is on eye drops (Dorzolamide & Timolol) and oral meds (Methazolamide) that has kept the eye pressure down so far (pre- and post-op). I was told by my eye specialist that the complex surgery is only necessary if the drugs do not work.
As for the young age, it seems these issues are in the genes and not usual for young dogs.
When my little one was first diagnosed with cataracts he did not seem to have any vision problems even though the vision was partially impaired with the immature cataract. It seems the glaucoma must be more advanced if your dog is not seeing well. However, soon after diagnosis my sweet little dog did develop some aggression issues that were entirely out of character. The eye doc said she did not think it was due to his eyes and the regular vet could not find any physical reason for the aggression either. So perhaps his eyes did bother him. As he has the cone on and is full of eye drops and meds post-op he probably does not see too well either now. The aggression is very occasional and minor now, but we will only know if it was eye related when he is off the meds and the cone is gone.
So please see the eye doc soon and I am sure your baby can be treated.
Good luck and prayers. |
