I mostly read English History and literature right now (I know...snorrrrre). But one book I've always loved (kind of a mystery, in a way) is Smilla's Sense of Snow - by Peter Hoag. The female character is super strong and independent. I couldn't put it down.
Oh! Have you ever read Seabiscuit (the horse) - one of THE best books! So fascinating. Sea had his own pets who traveled w/ him for races, and they'd cuddle w/ him - I think he had a dog and maybe a favorite goat? It just was a heartwarming book about animals in general - but it especially gave incredible insight into the way Sea's mind worked.
