i would talk to the landlord either way. just verify about the parking situation and make sure it's not public property like most sidewalks and streets are considered in lots of towns and cities. our sidewalk including the part of our driveway the is over the sidewalk and past the sidewalk to the street is considered public property. it is ours to fix if it gets cracks and we are liable if someone trips or got hurt due to a crack, but it's public property for people to be on or do anything they life we're just required to maintain it for them i guess. also our streets are public domain. as long as you don't block a driveway or a fire hydrant and park on the right ride of the street you can park anywhere you'd like.
just check with the landlord for sure and maybe speak with the neighbor that if he has a problem with the cans please just let you know next time but you appreciate him being "ever so kind" as to bring it up to your house.

kill him with kindness.
