I am SO relieved. The internal med vet just called me. First of all, the auto immune issue worry is off the table. That came from a miscommunication between the staff last night and the internal med on call. Apparently, the fact that this was a dog bite case was not mentioned and when the vet heard the symptoms and the blood work then it was a thought. Phew!!
Her right lung is now clear enough for her to be anesthetized....the vet told me that she is very comfortable with Summer undergoing surgery this afternoon. She will be transferred to the soft tissue department after surgery since wound care is their specialty. While she is under they plan to explore to make certain there is no foreign body and debride the wounds. They feel that they will also be able to close the wounds. They are very encouraged that there is quite a bit of granulation that has taken place over the past couple of weeks. They are going to scope her trachea and esophagus...and also will be doing a wash and culture of her right lung.
After this is completed this afternoon, I will be hearing from the soft tissue surgeon or student assigned to Summer. I am SO relieved knowing that something is going to be done today! They are covering every single possibility so we will definitely know what's up today. The vet is very encouraged and feels that Summer is going to be just fine...just a matter of finding out what antibiotic will work best....getting some weight on her little bones and then being a happy girl!
I will post an update later today after I hear from them.
