Leather ear isn't hereditary in my opinion. I have always found that I see it when the yorkie is in a cold environment ie...the house too cold, in a dog room with the a/c turned down really low. If you keep your home comfortable cool wise and not "cold" you won't see leather ear. My dogs have access to sunshine, going outside on warm days and in the winter my house is kept at a comfortable heat temp as to not get too cold. It's my personal opinion and I've seen a yorkie get leather ear from it being too cold in their environment. Catching it early will stop it but once your yorkie gets it will be hard to grow back a lot of hair in my experience it with it. Radar "almost" got it but I caught it in time and it never fully developed full blown leather ear.
I hope this helps!
