I do the same!

I don't like to put a harness on over clothes as they just don't fit as well. I want the harness to fit very securely, so I like coats/jackets with a slit on the back, so I can put her harness on first, then the coat, and feed the D-ring of the harness through the coat & then attach it to the leash.

I walk ZoE on a public trail that has many other walkers, runners, bikes, rollerbladers, and people walking their dogs. While I've not had to do it yet, I want to be able to pull her up in a split second if I have to in an emergency, and the only way I can do that is with a very well fitting harness.
