Questions about grooming Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me through a few grooming issues. First a little background...
I have a 16 mos old yorkie who I have been taking to the groomers since she was very young. I've always had them keep her hair in a puppy cut, and think she looks really cute with it short. She's a bigger yorkie (9 1/2 lbs) and I think her hair is cottony, although it doesn't ever tangle. As you can see in the avatar her ears are floppy - also that pic shows about 3 weeks growth since her last grooming, typically we'd only have gone about another week, maybe 2.
Anyway, I've been trying to grow her hair out. Partly because it's winter (even though she has tons of coats and a snowsuit) and partly because I think all these pics of yorkies with longer hair are so cute, I'd like to see how she looks. I've tried this two times before and gave up frustrated.
Here's the problem. Now that it's beginning to grow, I brush her at least once a day, and bath her more frequently than when its really short, and she still looks a mess ALL THE TIME. Not a cute, tussled kind of mess, but a "doesn't anyone take care of you, you poor neglected doggie" kind of mess.
At her longest (which I achieved for a very short time last summer), it wasn't any better.
So my questions are:
1. In all these adorable pics posted on this site, did everyone just finish grooming right before snapping them?
2. When the hair finally gets longish, does it start to "keep its style" a little longer?
3. If I decide to stick it out, is there something special I should be asking her groomer to do, or should I just stay away from the groomer for awhile? (I can bath her and clip her nails)
4. How often is too often to giver her a bath? (she looks best the day of her bath) Currently she's getting one every week. I use a mild puppy shampoo that doesn't seem to be drying her skin.
5. Is there a shampoo that helps keep the hair looking nice longer?
6. What kind of brush, comb is best?
I know this should be a simple, minor issue, but without some feedback, I'm afraid I'll end up at the groomers by the end of the week.
Any input is greatly welcome! |
