Sorry it's already getting rough.

When it gets hard to swallow, try lots of soft moist foods, like soups, stews, anything with sauces or gravy, pudding, ice cream, shakes, veggies cooked very soft w/butter or sauce or puree them. As a backup it's good to have a nutritional shake such as Ensure, or a protein shake. Meat and dense foods are the hardest to swallow. Don't worry about high calories in all that stuff I mentioned, this is not a time to diet; he needs to stock up on calories to avoid losing too much weight later with chemo.
