With an attitude like yours, you'll be a tremendous asset to wherever you volunteer.
I would add to the above - make sure your own pets are up to date on all of their vaccinations. Parvo is a threat to puppies and kittens, so be very careful if you have any babies at home. Animals that are fully vaccinated for parvo (I think it's a series of 2 or 3 shots) are protected.
