While I feel a commitment to a dog is just like a commitment to any other family member, I realize that not everyone feels the same way.
I agree that once things have gotten to such a point that giving up the dog is an option, it might be in the dog's best interest. I'd hate to think of any dog being caged for an extreme amount of hours, possibly mistreated and unloved because the owner is just sick of dealing with it. If you really don't want it, find someone who does.
