  I have used Nylabones - the flexible kind - since puppy hood.   I don't like hard chews, there is too much risk of cracking a tooth.  I agree w/ the others that regular tooth brushing is the best you can do for the dog's oral hygiene.  Some dogs will require dentals no matter how much home care you do and others wont.  All three of my dogs have pretty decent teeth, and it is due to home care.  A vet should examine the mouth at least every year.  Mine examine the mouths every time we have a vet appointment which is at least once a year but usually more often.
