I would hit the bells on the door everytime I would let him out. Eventually he associated the bell with outside. It didn't take long before he was ringing the bell like crazy until the sun went down and he couldn't see outside anymore!!
*Another funny story*
I use to have a dog trainer come to house to train Jake. She wanted to teach him how to ring the bell. She took the bells out her bag and Jake started doing his dance of excitement. I told her "He already knows that and please hide them, because he is a little obsessed with bells" He spent a large amount of that session looking where we hid the bell. LOL!!
