Whenever I went to housewarmings in NYC I brought something that could be consumed- wine, cake, a pasta basket, etc. I know how living in NYC apartments is and the last thing I ever wanted was more stuff to find space for.
Now that I am going to more housewarmings outside the city, friends buying houses, etc- I usually make up a basket- like buy a big mixing bowl and put different kitchen items in there (towels, measuring cups, spoons, etc.) or buy a towel basket and put in a luxury candle, a nice throw, a bottle of wine ,etc.
