A friend of mine uses the line "she's from a rescue and was turned over because she has lots of expensive medical problems" when ever she gets that "uneasy" feeling from someone who asks how much her dog cost (even though her dog is totally healthy). She says that normally stops the conversation cold. Now, that's not something I would want to say on a regular basis because medical reasons aren't the only reasons dogs end up in rescues, but I think it might be a handy thing to keep in one's repertoire for certain times.
