You know, it's possible your vet is wrong. I would say probably not, because a lot of people don't realize their pets are overweight. But perhaps your guy has a stocky build. Did the vet say what he based his assessment on?
Some dogs can manage their weight with free feeding, and some can't.
BTW, the technical term for the condition you describe is "porky yorkie".
