If he has a weight problem, you should take it seriously. It's not a vanity thing - pets can be cute when they are chubby. Unfortunately it's very bad for their health. It's not good for humans either, but especially given that dogs have a shorter life span than ours, it's important that we help them live as long as possible.

Take a look at him from above. You should be able to see a slight indentation in between his ribcage and his hips. You should also be able to feel his ribs if you exert slight pressure on his side.

It sounds like he gets a good amount of exercise, so maybe you just need to tweak his diet a bit. Does he ever get to run around off leash?
