When I first got Roxie, she had a crate. We used to lock her in it at night. Eventually she became totally crazy over it, and she would bite us if we touched it...especially to lock her in at night. Now she has her bed and the couch to sleep on, and the crate has been folded up and put away.
If you are potty training still, you'll most likely want to have a crate.
Roxie was completely potty trained when we got her, so that wasn't an issue.
