In MANY cases (many, not all) if it is caused by injury, it will be evident in an x-ray. In injuries, in addition to the displaced joint, there will also be indications of torn muscle tissue and/or scarring. If it is a congenial defect, this tissue trauma will not be present as it is the natural placement of the joint. Again...many, not all cases.
