From what I understand, the kids like touching them and it's awesome somehow.

I'm with you, I can wait until kids are cool enough to play with. When my best friend has her second kid next month, I'll be hanging out with her 5 year old. He'll probably be ignored anyway.
My advice, don't crochet any clothes items. Booties are cool, and cute, but everything else is really stiff and impractical. Baby blankets are cool. I still have mine my mom made for me.
