I saw the Tide bottle also, it sure looks like it was meant to store their food. I cannot imagine someone doing that.
As far as the "play pen" in looks like a crate to me and I cannot really say much about that since that is how I trained Sophie Kate. In fact she still goes in her crate all the time, but her crate is clean, comfortable and she actually likes napping in there.
