If you want to separate the dogs for an adjustment period, I would recommend a baby gate or an xpen instead of a crate. In my non-expert opinion, caging a dog will cause problems rather than give everyone time to adjust. I say this because when Max was a pup, I tried taking him outdoors with me in his crate while I worked in the yard and several people walked their dogs up to the crate. Max felt trapped and threatened. Big mistake. Worst way to socialize a dog.
A dog's crate should be large enough to stand up in and turn around.
