^^I agree, I think adult coat/colors are usually apparent at age 3-4.
I'm not an expert, but I believe they continue to change throughout their lives.
Max was still very dark on his first birthday. He is going to be 3 in November and his head has finally cleared. His saddle is a dark, steely color.
