Actually sugar can hurt them, it should be given to treat hypoglycemia not prevent it. Don't give it unless a vet has recommended it. Sugar raises insulin levels and if no protein has been given can cause blood sugar to crash creating another episode of hypoglycemia. So then people have to give it again and again instead of the dog having proper nourishment. While sugar can stimulate a pup’s appetite that is suffering hypoglycemia, it can actually can dull a healthy pups appetite, much like a kid eating candy before dinner. Many breeders use Nutri- drops because they enter the blood stream the fastest. I’ve heard you shouldn’t use honey, and white Karo syrup or Nutr-cal is okay to use. Here's more information on hypoglycemia. Toy Breed Hypoglycemia
